Foster Program
We do not have a shelter facility, so our rescued pets are kept in private homes by dedicated volunteers, or in the cat care room the Peachtree City PETSMART. These animals are given sanctuary and provided with socialization and all necessary veterinary care until permanent loving homes can be found. Foster care is provided in accordance with Fayette County's pet ordinance.
We are in need of foster homes both dogs and cats! If you are interested in fostering, please contact us for more detailed information. It is a very rewarding experience.
To those of us who love animals, the reward of seeing an orphaned animal become someone’s beloved pet is enormous. Because we do not have a facility, our only method of helping unwanted pets is to foster them in our homes until they are adopted. They come from many different places and circumstances such as strays, abandonment, owner surrenders, rescued from abuse, and litters resulting from pets and strays that were never sterilized. Additionally, although we are not affiliated with the Fayette County Animal Shelter, we work closely with the staff to help homeless pets. If a foster family is available, we rescue pets from the shelter, eliminating the threat of euthanasia.
By providing temporary housing, you are saving lives and giving many pets the opportunity to find permanent loving homes.
All pets brought into the Fayette Humane Society foster system must be approved by members of the Board of Directors. If you rescue a stray animal, unless the animal is approved by the Board of Directors, it cannot be fostered under the Fayette Humane Society license. If you decide to foster the animal on your own, it is your choice and all vet costs will be your responsibility. Please be aware that we do not accept any stray animal into the foster network until every attempt has been made to ensure that the animal does not have an owner. This includes notifying Animal Control, posting flyers in the area where the animal was found, and placing an ad in the local newspaper.
Depending on whether you foster dogs or cats, requirements will vary. You may need an area away from any pets of your own. All cats and kittens are to be kept indoors only. Ideally, puppy foster sites should have a separate kennel area or small confined space. Even one puppy not housetrained can wreak havoc if allowed free run of your house. Adult dog foster sites need a secure fenced yard. Fostering is best suited for homes without young children.
Fayette Humane Society is responsible for the cost of all veterinary care. You may be asked to take the pet to a local vet clinic for routine care, but you will not have to pay for these services. Pets will be tested before being placed in the foster home. We will never knowingly place a sick pet in a foster setting, but sometimes diseases may be undetectable while they are incubating, and it is, therefore, impossible to guarantee any animal’s health. Fayette Humane Society will not be held accountable for damages to your property or person from any foster pet.
All supplies, such as food, kennels, and litter will be provided. However, if you can provide any of these items, it is most appreciated, since we operate from donation and fundraising dollars. We are a non-profit organization and receive no state or local funding.
All pets, including puppies and kittens, are spayed or neutered before adoption, or new adopters are issued spay/neuter certificates to have the surgery performed, at our expense. Pets must weigh two pounds before they can be sterilized. Kittens are usually at this weight around 9 wks. of age. We will coordinate arrangements with you for the surgery if this is to be done prior to adoption. Once the pet is ready for adoption, you will be responsible for bringing the pet to the Fayetteville or Peachtree City PETsMART on Saturdays at 11:45 a.m. and picking the pet up at 4:00 p.m. if it is not adopted. You may be required to foster for as long as four months. During vacations or time away from your home, it is your responsibility to find someone to provide daily care for the fostered pet while you are gone.
